There is a very serious misconception that Pakistani politicians labour under.
They think that a victory at the polls is a licence to break the law. This is a fallacy that has been propagated by the Nawaz league, adnauseam, even though their lawyers privately admit that this indeed is incorrect.
However they continue in this vein, handsomely paid of course, not realising that they are simply buying time.
Eventually the law will prevail, and the law breaker will face his due. However the illegals manage to stay in power to amass wealth, unabashed and seemingly unstoppable.
A case in point is Zardari who rules Sindh, and is destroying what little is left of the economy. He faces no prison.
Unfortunately for Sindh, Zardari has no interest in improving the lot of his people, but continues to siphon all the development funds of health and education out of the Government of Sindh into offshore accounts.
The schools and hospitals are a glaring example of the diversion of desperately needed funds into private hands, then vanishing without a trace.
The Sindhi voter is content with the crumbs that come his way. Content that it is so ordained. The richest men in Sindh, Sharjeel Memon for example, have no visible means of income. No lands, no factories, no sugar mills, no drugs and no visible means of income.
Their only asset is their closeness to Zardari. They are the epitome of political capitalism.
Like the Indian films, sacks of money are deposited in their cellars with no bills or receipts. In one case 68 Crore rupees were burnt in the cellar, and the only remark was, “That’s ok, we will get more in a week.”
Sindh is indeed a rich province, but it appears that our democracy is faulty. And the rulers that come up need no training nor expertise, and are grateful for the windfall that comes their way for no apparent reason.
Blessed is this party. Sindh is the only province where polio still exists.
Even in the darkest, most underdeveloped parts of Africa, polio has been completely eradicated.
Yet in Pakistan, and that too in Larkana, the birthplace of the Bhuttos, which in the election campaign, was to be turned into the Paris of the East, all they got in return was HIV spread among 4 year old children by use of defective syringes.
Yet their following remains unabated and the money of the province of Sindh vanishes without a trace.
The legacy left to the Sindhis is polio and HIV. A sad gift from democracy indeed.
